bumping, my pea plants aren't very big but there are a few pods growing.

do they start to obviously burst at the seams or something?

Same here with carrots, I am always impatient and pick them when they are too small.

peas - it depends what sort they are. If they are sugar snap type, you eat the whole thing and they are good small (and raw). It depends how big a pea you like I guess in terms of when you pick them. I would maybe wait a week in this weather to let them grow on a bit.

If you do miss the odd one or leave it for say a month or so, they grow very big and puffy and don't taste as nice, IMO.

carrots - again depends what size you want. I sowed some in March that have lovely leafy tops but won't be pulling them for another couple of months as I want decent sized ones.

if the pea pods are getting fat like they look like there would be full size peas in them, then PICK!

Yes, if they are fat then you do need to pick them to keep more coming on.

I have some asparagus peas, they have pretty red flowers but taste vile...
