How to prune overgrown rose bushes and other questions?!

Hi,

I'm pretty wet behind the ears as far as gardening is concerned but I've decided to get stuck into the garden this year!

We inherited a lovely garden full of roses and flowering shrubs etc. For 3 years, apart from some pretty shoddy cutting back and a bit of weeding our garden, the garden has been left to it's own devices, pretty much.

We have some lovely rose bushes that produce loads of flowers every year. Some are climbing, some are not, but all are totally over grown and need a lot of taming. Are they past a hard pruning or will I get away with it. What are the general rules, please?

Also, is now the time to prune back everything else too?

I have no doubt you will see my name a lot in this section over the next few months!!!
