the kids are growing a pumpkin as part of a competition to be judged on halloween, and it's doing really well, the flowers are starting to bloom, so how many should i leave on to enable they get the best result? One, two, three? Loads of flowers budding atm

It's not too bad really lou, I managed by trial and error last year and grew a pumpkin 15" across.

Great site WWB, wish I had had the info last year

all that talk about pollinating and giving it 400sq ft of soil

ffs i thougth we just had to water it and pincha few flowers off

i don't think i have 400sq ft of free soil!

i dont think they will be winning somehow

400 square feet of soil does sound a bit over the top!

SaintGeorge · 11/07/2005 12:25

The patch I used was only about 6' x 6' and if I had raised the pumpkin up off the ground, could have got away with less.

The important bit is the pollinating.

lou33 · 11/07/2005 12:27

for 400ft of soil i would expect to be able to turn it into a carriage and drive to the competition in it

You can wind the stem round and round so you don't need so much space!

lou33 · 11/07/2005 12:50

really?

this is a ghost rider pumpkin, a piece of information i bet you were all dying to know...

I just can't get mine to seed - got courgettes and squashes growing out of my armpits but pumpkins don't want to know.

Any ideas

am a complete dunce on this sort of thing i'm afraid, we bought a baby plant for a fiver for this competition because the money is going to charity.
