What kind of green manure seeds should I plant?

I didn't realise that there were so many different kinds.

My fabby new veg patch is only just finished and I want to leave it a while before growing anything properly as I used a weedkiller to get rid of the bindweed (it was that or wait a billion years to clear the ground, you have never seen such bindweed).

Which one should I go for?

Getting a bit late for a lot of them, I would say that the best bet to get well established in late September would be a mix of winter grazing rye and vetch (rye is a good cover & very weed suppressing, the vetch is a nitrogen fixer). The two green manures that I use overwinter are rye/vetch, and phacelia - but I would say that phacelia doesn't establish so well after mid September.
Field beans are also meant to be good sown at this time of year, but they don't overwinter reliably for us here (west wales - mild but wet & windy).
Alternatively you could mulch heavily and then put plastic or ground cover fabric down over the top, doesn't look so pretty but you'll have lovely soil come the springtime.

We were going to go for lupins. Bindweed is the most incredible stuff isn't it!

I reckon covering it is the way to go - should hammer any last remaining bits of bindweed as well. To be fair though I've had plots covered in bindweed, and plots covered in couchgrass, and I'd go for bindweed of the two any day, at least you can just pull it out by the handful, and it doesn't seem to smother stuff the way that couch does.
