What has eaten my rose foliage? And should I prune now??

A few weeks back I kept finding (and removing) lots of little bright green caterpillars on the leaves of most of my rose plants.

They were hungry buggers - managed to strip them back pretty damned fast

Most of my roses are fairly young, and I'm wondering what to do with the affected ones. There's some new growth sprouting but they don't half look spriggy and leggy now.

I'm not sure it's pruning time but should I just cut them back hard and hope for the best? Help, I love my roses

Not sure what they are but no dont prune now, leave it until autumn.
There is some good info on pests etc on the RHS site
