Clover on our lawn. Would this upset you?

We rent a house which was brand new when we moved in. We plan to stay a while so have made reasonable efforts with the garden to make it nice. Our lawn is a bit bumpy, and currently covered in clover. We commented on how pretty it was, and how it was attracting bees and butterflies....

Next door however doesn't share our enthusiasm. He has complained that the seeds will go onto his lawn and suggested some chemicals to kill it off!

He is a bit of a miserable sod, and I don#t really want to use loads of weedkiller in our garden. What would you do?

Ignore him! It's your garden and not your problem if the seeds go into his garden, what are you supposed to do? Clover isn't as bad as dandelions or something like that.

Your neighbour is being an arse. I am a keen gardener and we never use weedkiller. It is rotten stuff. My FIL is always using 'weed, feed and mosskiller' in his regimented garden. Sure, his grass looks good, but he doesn't have the birds and lovely bees and buterflies we have. Our garden is well tended - I do not an to suggest we have a jungle! - but there is a balance. Personally I prefer my cottage garden to his municipal monstrosity.

If he doesn't like clover, then he can use the chemicals on his lawn. The air is full of seeds of all kinds of weeds - yours aren't going to make any real difference to him.

Personally, I like clover, daisies, buttercups etc in the lawn!

LOL at utterly butterly! We have loads of clover as well. The rabbit loves it!

What possible harm can clover do to his lawn?
Your lawn will never produce clover seed if it is cut regularly. On top of that, even if it did the clover is a trefoil and hence fixes nitrogen in the lawn so feeding the grass. It also puts 'bottom' in the lawn.

Ignore him. Clover is not a nuisance weed. Don't suppose he can stop dandelion seeds blowing over and they are far worse.

Leave them! hate the over manicured look - natural is the way to go!

Our garden is full of dandelions as our autistic son loves blowing the clocks. It makes him very happy and for a few weeks keeps him occupied.
One of our neighbours cuts their lawn so short it looks bare, and horrible

We cut the grass on our allotment field. People always try to leave an uncut strip to ENCOURAGE clover-bees-pollination. Kill the bee attractants and watch the problems for fruit later on.

Neighbour is Armenian I think. He has some grape vines planted but no flowers! He has a perfect lawn though.

Like everyone else said - we need plants that attract bees and it's lovely watching them bumble their way around the flowers. He sounds like a miserable old git but if you want a quiet life you need to keep your neighbours sweet, so just tell him, (in the nicest possible way) that you're designing your garden to attract wildlife, and flatter him by asking if he has any advice!

Clover makes the lawn more drought proof. After what I'm sure will turn out to be a hot few months, his will be parched & brown whereas yours will be green and beautiful...maybe then would be a good 'told you so' time?!

Are you kidding?! I LOVE having clover on my lawn!! Have to point out that it is my first lawn (had no garden in our previous flat) and it looks so pretty
