Tree near a house - how near is too near?!

We moved into our house narly 3 years ago in the autumn, and the following spring discovered a small sapling growing in the garden. I've identified it as an Ash (I think) and I'm quite fond of it as it's already about 7 feet tall (!) but quite slim and not likely to steal lots of light. I am worried that the root system may do some damage to the house foundations - it's approx 7m from the house, does anyone know if this is too close? And if so, is it easy to move a small tree?

Thanks

Your best bet is to call a tree surgeon, say you are thinking of getting rid of it or moving it and ask for advice. He'll give you the lowdown. The problem is not just about the roots btw, it's about water shrinkage, the tree will pull the water from the soil and then your patio will sink!
