Monterey cypress 'Goldcrest' (Cupressus macrocarpa 'Goldcrest' what am i doing wrong

i cant seem to keep even the easiest plants alive. Ive placed it in a patio container. But it seems to be fading and parts of it looing brown. How often should i be watering it? Does it need feeding? Can i revive it? I cant seem to kepp houseplants either. I admit i havent really watered it but we have had showers recently.

I told i didnt really need to do much to it. Also how much water-how do you know when a plant has had enough? I really am useless.
