I have always grown courgettes in previous years in a raised bed- but they take up masses of space- even just one plant and we then have a glut of fruits which we never get through.
I am not thinking of growing butternut squash instead. The raised bed is around 12 feet by 5 feet on a south facing wall, so gets loads of sun and is sheltered.

Question- how many squash should I plant out in a corner of the bed- do they grow as big as a courgette plant?

We have only tried this once and our plant tended to sprawl about 5 feet and didn't produce much.

Yes, at least as big as a courgette. I'd say that butternuts are probably one of the harder squashes to grow - I would go for a Buttercup which is just as nice to eat and generally easier, also the plants are maybe a bit smaller.
