Have just received my annuals, how far apart do I plant them?

I've just had 70 marigold and 70 gazania plants in the post, how far apart do I plant them in containers or in the flower bed?

I thought they would cover a big area but each box is only A4 size!

Thanks

Something like this (M = marigold....G= gazania)

M . . . M . . . M . . . M . . . M . . . M
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
. . G . . . G . . . G . . . G . . . G . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
M . . . M . . . M . . . M . . . M . . . M

The idea being to stagger them.

if you choose to not do a formal border- then put them in groups of 3 or 5 (3 in a triangle and 5 like the spots on a dice)

M ... M G ... G M ... M G ... G
....... ....... ....... .......
...G... ...M... ...G... ...M...

OR

M ... M G ... G M ... M G ... G
....... ....... ....... .......
...G... ...M... ...G... ...M...
....... ....... ....... .......
M ... M G ... G M ... M G ... G

Thanks MUM23ASD, they are all planted now. Not sure when the flowers will come, they are all tiny!
