Hi there! We have a lovely tiny pot with 2 sunflower plants in... each one about 5 inches high. I am planning to plant them outside now but they are very floppy and son't seem like they'll stand up... is this because they need a bigger pot? Are you supposed to put canes up for sunflowers?

Any help appreciated, gardening is not among my fortés.

yes I think you can tie them to stakes or something.

hmm... will have to go and source some, then.

I just thought that they would be strong eenough to be free-standing at such a puny height, and wondering whether something's gone wrong?

They will need a bigger pot, one each, with a stake in each.

I've found slugs adore sunflowers though and have decimated them over night. This year if we do any I'm going to get an old 2 litre plastic drink bottle, cut off top and bottom and put it around them as I've read they don't like climbing over the sharp it at the top where it has been cut off.
