Just about to start a gardening club at my DCs primary school. Has anyone done this before and have any useful tips?

Have you joined the RHS school gardening campaign?

Are you going to be running the club at lunchtime, after school or during lesson time? My best tip (and you've probably done this already) is to find a very supportive teacher, so that you have an ally within the school. Emphasise how well gardening fits with the curriculum (healthy eating, where our food comes from, science, geography etc). See whether your local garden centre will sponsor you - ours donated some slightly bedraggled plants.

We've had a large amount of equipment donated from Homebase and I have looked at the RHS site but not in depth yet as we're not really underway until after the half term break. Unfortunately the teacher who led the previous gardening club has departed for sunnier climes, so I thought I'd stand in! [gulp faced emoticon]

We're going to be doing it after school, once a week, and I was hoping to have some produce for the kids to show towards the end of the summer term... quick growing things like lettuce, raddishes (and maybe some peas) etc, as the summer holidays cut right through the growing season for other 'long term' veg.

I have lots of ideas but if there's any practical advice as to what works with primary school kids, and what doesn't then I'd be very grateful!
