STUMPS and how to get rid of them

We have today sawed down a sycamore that was 10 foot tall and right under a corner of our house AND removed a hideous lilac tree

BUT we are left with stumps which always seem to start growing again IME

How can i make sure the trees are actually dead ( esp sycamore as literally growing against the house)

Our garden is literally littered in stumps of trees from a bygone age..is there any way i can get rid without 'stump busters' ie make them ROT away??

i've not had this problem, but when the massive oak tree in my parents' front garden died from a tree virus, the tree surgeon had to get rid of the stump. the roots were massive.

hmm i cannot afford to get a specialist out but thanks for advice

Drill a hole in the stump and fill with salt or copper objects. (Not sure if it works, may be an old wives tale!).

i wish it would work on my zillion foot tall scots pine that the council will not let me touch!

Depends how organic you want to be. You can get some poison crystals from B&Q and spread them on the top. The poison seeps down into the trunk and roots and kills it all. Mercilessly.

Like pan says - it's the only real option or they will both be springing up again in a matter of weeks. but it does take ages. or you can rent a stump grinder from a rental place and grind them down to under ground level.

best is to dig them out if you can. if not the whole thing then dig roudn them and get as much out as you can, then use weedkiller on the sprouts as soon as they start popping up

good luck

Believe it or not you can hire something called a "stump grinder" .

DP said its a mean piece of machinery but does the job.

The stump does have to be close to the ground though.

Try your local Hire shop or places like Travis Perkins

This is the stump grinder details from Travis Perkins for example
