Growing climbing vine where there's no earth - how big a pot/container?

Want to put something outside the bedroom window as it's huge and overlooks the drive/street.
Thankfully drive is quite large so no one much within close range but it would be nice to have some foliage over and around the window.
There's no flower bed and beneath the tarmac is probably bricky stuff I am guessing - so I thought about a large container of some sort?
But how large would it need to be and would it need feeding a lot etc...thinking of a Russian vine or maybe a jasmine or that one that is part of the potato family.

TIA
