Does canned petrol degrade over a 16 months - asking for a new mower?

Hi, I bought a Jerry can of petrol for my lawnmower last year just before it packed up. Since then we've hired a mower - which always comes with petrol already in it. So I have had no need to use the other petrol, not owning a car.

Now I'm looking to buy a spanking new mower - but the website suggests using brand new petrol on it, which makes sense. On the basis that petrol sort of degrades over the course of a year, so might be no good for the mower. Is this true, should I buy new petrol for it?

In which case, how do I dispose of petrol might be my next question?

I'd ask council or local fire brigade how to dispose of safely .

Yes it goes off after around six months. Some council tips might accept it?

i currently have a car full of petrol which I need to get drained down which is irritating but it’s over a year old and could knackered the engine apparently.
