Has anyone grown Salvia hot lips in shade?

I've got a Salvia Hot Lips that's doing really well in a pot in full sun, but it's so big it's blocking the path.
I'm going to plant it in the ground when it's finished flowering and been cut back. One of the spots I could move it to is shady, but everything I read says it won't flower very well, has anyone got one in the shade?

I came to say mine nearly died in full sun in a pot and is doing much better in semi-shade in the porch! Maybe I am further south than you but mine did not like the 30+ heat!

I have a Hot lips (that was my nickname when I met my DH,at work because I was nursing previously) my back garden is NE facing, but because it's 200 long it does get sun. Hot lips is shaded by big shrubs and a big crab apple,in very hot summers,looses the red lips,goes completely white, but apart from that, not noticed any problems. Hopefully you have had some rain, could move her in about an month.

I have a Poundland hot lips in shade and she is bountiful! I attack it every now again because it’s massive then I’m rewarded with a whole new load of beauty. It’s I’m in the shady part of my garden where very little grows.

They grow leggy and scruffy in shade as they try to reach for the light, and they flower far less than in sun.

Glad to hear it can be done, I'm still a little bit undecided, I do have a sunnier spot it could go, but tempted to get the Amethyst lips for there.
I wouldn't want it to get leggy and struggle, I've got a bit of time to decide.

Well,if you keep it in the pot for now,you can move it around and hopefully find the most practical spot.

I love salvia in all it millions of varieties. It’s such an easy plant to grow. I’ve got some hot lips growing out through a hedge in the shade and it’s a bit leggy but it flowers and flowers. The season is really long and I it flowers right into autumn. I cut it back really hard each year.

It’s easy to take cuttings too although the stems of seedlings can break if you don’t handle them carefully.

I love Salvias. My garden has , hot lips, purple varieties, a blue, a pink and a burgundy. They are great for attracting bees and hover flies so great for wildlife. Mine end up taking over the flower beds but come the spring the get pruned really hard and bounce back. My favourite flowers.
Edit: love the scent too.

Good idea to move the pot but it weighs a ton!

I’ve just planted cherry lips in a sunny border, hoping she will survive next summer. This summer killed most of my perennials.

What time of year is best to cut it back?

I had one on the garden, it became absolutely massive and virtually took over half the border. I hsd to dig it out.

Have one in a pot now and it really didn't like full sun, it seems much happier now the weather has changed, it has more flowers appearing and they are not just plain white ones, I'm now getting the proper hot lips colours.

I cut it back it spring at least half usually quite a bit more. I wait until I can see little green bit of growth on the stem and roughly cut just above. I use a hedge trimmer so quite a rough cut but all my salvias grow well and flower well.

Just cut it back in spring each year and keep it within bounds. It won't thank you for moving it to a shady place.

The colour varies depending on temperature, as you've probably realised.
They're one of the few plants I've seen this summer that have been coping well everywhere, as long as they're established in the ground. They just can't access water as effectively in a pot

I'll move it to a sunny spot away from the path I think, and find something else for the shady area.
I do love it, it's been fabulous, full of bees, but I didn't take into account that it would grow so bushy and wide.

Hot lips is the only thing that seems to have thrived in my garden this summer as well - has just flowered and flowered and absolutely alive with bees. Thank goodness, as the rest of the garden looks apocalyptic.

The name gives me a giggle every time I think about it. The flower shapes are rather suggestive as well

I found hot lips really easy to divide. Take it out of the pot any time between now and November, pull it apart (ideally with 2 garden forks) or untangle and clip off a few rooted stems. Then you can plant 2 or 3 clumps around the garden and see how they do.

Mine has loved the SE England heatwave in a pot! First time growing one and am now a salvia convert!
