Brambles

My garden borders a public footpath,the neighbours garden on the other side of the path is overgrown with brambles. I have a chain link fence and panel fencing that is about 6 inches inside the chain link. I get brambles overreaching ftom the garden across the footpath. The brambles create an arch going down my fence and over the top to the inside of my garden fence. How on earth can I get rid of brambles growing down my fence. I cut them back but they are rooting between the chain link and panel fencing. I'm reluctant to use weedkiller as cats use the path as do dog walkers. Is there an animal friendly weedkiller that kills brambles ?

How are people walking down a bramble filled path?

You need to dig them out from the bit between the chain link fence and your wooden fence. It takes time and patience but you have to cut them down and dig them out.

Our gardener trimmed them back and then told us to paint stump and root killer on the exposed ends.

Ducking, pushing them back, I end up cutting it all back, neighbour is mid 70s, a little 'odd', likes them creating an arch! It's encroaching into my garden though.

I can't access it to dig out..chain link is around 4-5ft high, im not tall. I can't get to the bottom.

No fruit on the runners unfortunately! 😂

Someone owns or is responsible for the public footpath, and should be maintaining it.

This is the sort of thing the anonymous post on a local facebook page is perfect for. Get someone else to do it, obviously.

The footpath is council owned, leads to a small woodland. Chances of them coming out...🙈
The neighbour is a borderline hoarder, garden is overgrown and lots of junk. He doesn't see any issue. I've spoken to him, he just asks if I want to do it for him! Umm..no...., I've got enough to do! He's a bit of a CF given half a chance!

Would extending your reach help you get in between? Telescopic loppers like these?

Someone at the council will be in charge of public rights of way. Is there a local walking group like the Ramblers that could put some pressure on? They might well have some volunteers with loppers.

So rather than tackle the problem at source - out in the open, on the path where you can swiftly cut it right back with a powered implement - you'd rather wait for the bramble to root itself in an inaccessible part of your garden and then worry?

Well it's certainly not my responsibility to cut his hedges, nearly 100ft length. He could employ someone to do it, but he won't. He got a quote and didn't like it. His garden is overgrown and lots of junk!
I cut all new overhang that reaches my garden, unfortunately it is years of neglected growth I'm fighting. There is public footpath between us. The council have been around once in the 4 years we have been here.
