Why have my chilli peppers grown into such an unusual shape?

Why have my chilli peppers grown in this weird shape?? There’re supposed to look like the standard peppers you get in the supermarket 😢

Yes, very like scotch bonnets.

They look like the really really hot ghost chillies. If you bought plants before the peppers formed they may have mixed them up, and I have had seeds that were not the variety I thought. If they are ghost chillies be careful, I grew them one year and they were deadly hot!

If they go orange they might be habaneros.

Agree with a pp about inconsistent watering possibly causing them to be mis-shapen, but they don't look like ordinary bell peppers or chillies to me. They aren't ripe yet, so it will be interesting to see how they develop.

They look like a different variety, looks like the wrong seed we're put in the packet.

They look like scotch bonnet to me too. Mine went a lovely bright yellow when they were ripe.

I agree with others, it's a mislabeled plant.

You said 'chilli peppers' and 'standard peppers' which are not the same things.

Where did you get the plants or seeds from?

Because that’s what peppers do! They’re Scotch bonnets right? That’s what they look like.

If they were supposed to be cayenne/ jalapeños / fresnos then they have been mislabelled.

Supermarket ones are chosen for their uniform shape and the ones that don’t meet this are sold to manufacturers for sauces etc instead. Nature doesn’t grow to order.

Different varieties grow into different shapes. Watering can also have an effect, but these do like quite normal for certain types.
