What shrubs and perennials have survived the heatwave in your garden?

I fear I’m going to have quite a lot of replacing to do. I’m in the SW on clay.

My roses and a couple of clematis in shady areas are ok, aside from salvias, nepeta and rosemary not so much else.

What other shrubs( think I’m going to put in more shrubs that can cope better with heat to fill spaces) perennials and even trees are coping well in your garden? Even my apple trees which are fussy at the best of times are struggling. Amalanchier is fine. Hoping the hardy geraniums make it, they don’t look well. 😞

So far the well established perennials are doing ok - persicaria, veronicastrum, geraniums, epimidium. My (annual) tithonia are triffids, some are 3m high. The camellias look ok but I have no idea if we will get any flowers next year. Daphne are struggling and have had to have some buckets of water.

but the important stuff I’ve put in this year is struggling and I think I’ve lost the cornus I splurged on a bit late on May.

Lavender and rosemary and mint fine.

my apple has needed a lot of watering as has my ornamental cherry.

clematis and rose are in shade and ok, I have two forsythia x intermedia which is doing ok (bought this year).

my magnolia that I bought this year has really struggled - it’s currently in a pot but I’m worrying about where to put it in.

Honeysuckle, roses, rosemary, lavender. Fuchsia bush is drooping but ok. Mint- lovely purple flowers.
To hot to weed so the bindweed flowers are actually looking quite pretty!

As others have said, rosemary, lavender etc. my Achillia are doing well as are the Eryngium. Next year I intend to grow some different varieties of these.
i have noticed the wild flowers that are surviving on the dry grass verges. I’m going to focus on the cultivated versions of those for plants to survive drought.

I’ve just got back from a week’s holiday and expected a complete desert, but the garden still looks reasonably green. The roses, verbena, summer allium, salvia, bee blossom, lady’s mantle, lavender and euphorbia are still happy and I’ve got a dahlia that has actually started to flower whilst we were away. The worst hit are the poor sad hydrangeas and lupins.

Without doubt the plant doing the best in this weather is Gaura lindheimeri - the tall one with white flowers, not the short pink flowered one. I work in several gardens where I've planted this and it has shrugged off everything the weather has thrown at it. In gardens where everything else is struggling in the drought, Gaura has thrived. I'm really impressed with it.

My lavender, salvia, coneflowers, geraniums, dianthus, hucheura, geums, Michaelmas daisies, anchillea, knautica and verbena are all fine. My hydrangeas and very small Acer are struggling. My astilbe, fern and primroses are all ok but get shade during the day.

Pyracantha, Roses are doing well. And my seaside daisies that I have dotted all over my flowerbeds are some spreading beautifully, a simple little plant but I love them.

Everything has survived but we have been out there everyday other than when we went on 2 week holiday. I was nervous what we would find on return but all has been fine. Hydrangeas, lavenders, lilies, magnolia, Dianthus, daisies, honeysuckle, roses, dahlia, lawn etc and 4 big trees. Lots of leaf clearance needed from other big trees around.

Most of mine are ok even with the heat. They’ve bounced back anyway.

All been watered daily and fed weekly for most part as in pots.

My rose in a big pot has struggled all year but has now decided to come back to live with lots of new leaves and buds 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I did treat myself to a little trip to garden centre and got a penstemon laura and a mini chrysanthemum which is so pretty I’m going to get another one tomorrow.

My geums which I adore have absolutely loved this year - I’ve got a fluffy yellow and a tempo rose which haven’t stopped flowering ❤️

My Oleander is doing well. As you say Salvia’s. Love the number of bees visiting them.

Canna 'Tropicanna' Black Velvet - Large Plants
I was given a few of these last year and have them in pots, they are fabulous and I’m going to look into getting more along this line to brighten up the flowerbeds next year.
many plants are looking very sad here, particularly those not so well established.

i bought perennial plants this year, to plant in pots, salvia, geranium, scabious done wonderfully
guem no flowers despite plenty of watering
campanula sago done very badly, perhaps i over watered,

Only the grass dried out in our garden. Dh has been collecting the washing machine water and watering all the beds with it, he's out there in the early morning using it. So the Hydrangea, lavender, heather, camellias etc all look fine.

Hollyhocks planted from bulbs are going insane!

Otherwise...meh. Geranium, geum, jasmine, hydrangea, lavender, blood grass, hosta, heuchera, heucherella, salvia, rudbeckia, echinacea, verbena bonearensis, fruit bushes, clematis, passion flower and grape vines all surviving but not thriving.

I have one rose bush in the sunniest south facing spot that is at least creating new flowers.

Seems like there's no logic to any of it. Every plant is in 'right place' and yet...
