What is eating my delphiniums and how can I stop it?

Help !
What is eating my delphiniums and what can i do about it ?

Slugs. Usually destroy all delphiniums within a day or so. Aunt recommends putting them in plant pots and surrounding with sharp or gritty tape so slugs can’t climb up.

I've put grit around the base of the plant, is that not enough to deter the little blighters ?

I think it needs to be a thick and deep and very sharp layer to scare them off

I've tried to grow them in pots, used grit etc but the slugs still get them. Never managed to get them to regrow in spring as the slugs eat the new shoots before I can blink.

I now have to content myself with looking at the fantastic displays in the Floral Pavilions at RHS shows.

I had to get up early to catch the culprit but here he/she is !
Does this mean the slugs are innocent or are they partners-in-crime ?? ?
