Tree identification

Think it’s an Ash. Have you got any other pictures?

My Ash looks much like that.

I had a Google and it’s either an ash or a rowan. I’ll try to get some more photos but thanks so much for your replies

It’s not a Rowan, their leaves are much smaller. Rowan is a mountain Ash, it’s the same family of trees.

Yes. Fairly likely although you can't really see how big it is in the photo, and they do self-seed.

A rowan will only grow to about 5 metres and are part of the rose family, and even though they are referred to as mountain ash, they are totally unrelated. The leaves look similar but are a lot smaller. It also flowers in spring and has ornamental berries in autumn. Often planted as a street tree and in parks & gardens.

It looks like an ash to me. A native forest tree, and they can get massive. Are the twigs bright green with black buds at the tips?

I think an Ash.
Beautiful trees but watch for Ash die back.
They're also known for randomly dropping branches, which, when the tree is as huge as the one I have, can be big buggers

My next door neighbour has an ash tree which is very thirsty and means that I have to water my plants near that boundary about twice as often as others (they have a paved yard). I had a gardener round the other month to help out with some work and he mentioned that the ash tree's too close to my house (about 3/4 metres). Apparently supposed to be minimum 8m as roots are quite invasive but neighbours don't seem to be too fussed about this.

@NoIdeaWhyNow The biggest problem with ash in a domestic setting is that they grow big and fast. Really big, like over 30 metres tall, so having a tree that can grow to that size with a trunk diameter in excess of 2 metres so close to a building is not a great idea. And as a pp said, they are susceptible to ash dieback disease. Might be worth asking the tree officer at your local council to come and look at it.

Neighbours are tricky so I'm having to tread carefully and bide my time. They had zero interest in the issue when I raised it despite me making it clear (very nicely) that they would be responsible for any root-based damage to my property.

We have a similar issue wuth i think the same tree, its on our neighbours side but has pulled up our garden path and lifting the fence, they are also very tricky. Would a Tree officer come and inspect it?

That's why I suggested the tree officer. As well as checking to see whether a tree is (or will be) causing damage to neighbouring properties, they can also find out whether it has TPO on it, and make a decision about a tree's future.

One thing I will say though, is that trees reduce temperature and remove CO2 fom the atmophere, so if we are indeed moving into a new UK climate as the Met Office said earlier this week, the more trees we have the better.
