How to encourage amaryllis to dormancy?

I have two pots with amaryllis bulbs that flowered at Christmas. Then I moved them to a spare room to wait for the leaves to wilt and ultimately store them until autumn. I actually forgot to water them for months. And the leaves are still green and healthy! How can I encourage it to dormancy? If I don’t, it wont rebloom in winter.

This probably isn't answering your question, but I let mine flower when it wants. In the wild it would flower in summer and not be put in a cupboard for a couple of months, so I feel a bit mean forcing it to flower at an unnatural time!

I don’t mind doing that. I just thought they need this rest period like most bulbs!

Ours does its own thing. As you can see its aim is to take over the world. This year it had about six flowers (and <touch wood> its flowered every year for at least the past five).

Looks just like mine @DelurkingAJ! When does it flower?

Spring time, around Easter. I think one year it got confused and also flowered in the autumn.
