The Generous Gardener (DA rose) on 6ft fence

Hello,

I have a soon to be gap on my NE facing fence which I’m thinking of filling with a climbing rose. I’d love a DA Generous Gardener but a little worried that a standard 6ft fence won’t give it much room. Would love to hear whether anyone has one in a similar position? Or any alternatives I could consider?

I don’t think that’s enough room. You’ll probably lose most of it to your neighbours. I’ve got a Gertrude Jekyll on a 6 foot fence, the DA site said it was suitable, and it just fits. It’s in its 3rd year now….

I have David Austin's The Lady of the Lake on my 6ft fence. It's a very pretty colour, just like Generous Gardener but with a beautiful yellowy open centre that's great for pollinators. It would probably grow bigger but I find it very easy to contain and have trained it across two fence panels now. Probably my favourite plant in the garden right now.

I adore my generous gardener. I think it'll be okay, especially if you train it outwards nearer the bottom so it's got more room when it grows up

It's so lovely. And smells soo good too! And flowers forever!

I have a Generous Gardener rose. It rarely, (never), gets pruned and is such a reliable rose. It's also huge though and might to be too big for the space. Smells absolutely divine, roses and lemons all at once.

Gertrude Jekyll is the best one IMO superb colour and scent and grows to fence height.

If you prune it and train it along the fence it’ll be fine, I have lots of DA roses and the generous gardener is more manageable than some (and gorgeous with loads of flowers & much healthier than some of the other varieties)

I have a generous gardener on my front door step and it's not very big as I prune it every year. I would be worried it would just scramble over the fence to the sunlight, though, and bloom in your neighbours garden instead, where's there's more sun? I've had that with a few climbing plants.
