Planting a rose as a complete gardening novice!

Hi!

I want to plant a rose bush in my garden - we have a 1.5m square area in the front garden which needs some colour. I’m a complete novice though so I would love some tips! I know what rose I want, the Fairy rose, but can I literally just buy the potted one and plant it? Is it that easy?

You pretty much can buy a shrub rose in a pot and plant it.

If you buy a rose from David Austin you usually get a leaflet telling you exactly how to plant it and look after it. They also have loads of information under 'Learn' on their website.

This is pretty much everything you need to know here.

I've always found them to be really helpful if you email them with any questions too. Lovely rose you've chosen there.

Thank you! It’s good to know I’ll get a guide, I struggle to keep house plants alive 😂

Give your rose the best possible start. Prepare the ground well before you plant it. Dig in plenty of compost. You'll find plenty of good advice on the RHS website and on rose growers' websites. It pays to read up beforehand on any plant you buy.

I know what my bedtime reading will be this weekend!
