Gooseberries! Why have my 4 bushes not produced fruit?

I've recently taken over an allotment. The gooseberry bushes were a tad neglected, lots of bindweed and weeds surrounding them.

We have cleared all that away, but they have not produced any fruit

We did I go wrong, any top tips for a bumper crop next year please

Ours did produce fruit but, with all the rain, the mildrew set in and then to finish them off, the annual plague of sawfly ate all the leaves within a few days! So no gooseberry crumble again this year .

To encourage a bumper crop, feed with a good fertiliser in Spring (apprently they need lots of potassium) and mulch with well rotted manure or compost - have you got some local stables who'll give you some manure for free if your predecessor hasn't left you any? The sooner you get it the better 'cos you'll need to give it plenty of time to rot down

I think you sometimes just get a 'bad' year. Last year our 4 year old plum tree produced loads of lovely plums but this year nothing and two of our three apple trees that produced well last year are doing so again but the third, absolutely zilch, although it looks healthy.
