Oh dear, first time trying to grow potatoes (in bags) and I've completely messed up. Thought you were supposed to earth up as soon as you saw a green sprout so that's what I did today. It didn't feel quite right... Now I read you're supposed to wait until the shoots are quite tall before earthing up for the first time. Have I ruined them? Is there any chance they'll battle their way through the couple of inches of compost I've chucked on top of them and carry on growing?

I'm no Alan Titchmarsh, but what's wrong with moving the soil away and leaving them as they were for a while longer. You only did this today. OK I am not very good at this, so if that can't be done, I'd like to know why!

Potatoes are tough as old boots. They'll grow their way through in no time. You're doing well to have shoots already!

They'll be fine, and it will help protect the leaf tips from damage from late frosts.

They’ll be fine. I plant mine in tubs each year and just fill the tubs right to the top when I first plant them rather than earthing up and they always grow well. (I watched videos on you tube before I started - Tony O’Neill Simplify Gardening)

I earth them up as soon as I see shoots. They'll be fine.

They’ll be fine. I got an crop last yesr from ones missed deep in the ground from the year before. Potatoes are generally quite simple to grow so don’t panic

Thanks all. I panic dug the shoots back out again like a crazy woman digging through the dirt with my bare hands. Haha. Sounds like maybe that wasn't necessary. Let's see!
