I think it’s a beech seedling. They grow into lovely big trees (in the right place)!

I think it looks more like a cherry than a beech. Beech leaves look like they are breaking out of cocoons when they start to come out and there arent any cocoons in the pic

Did it have brown leaves on it over winter, as beeches don’t tend to drop their leaves? Beech leaves tend to be rolled up and very lime green as they emerge, they then darken.

Can you post a single leaf close up, including the leaf stem? That'll quickly settle the beech v cherry debate.

This is the first time I've seen leaves, it was originally just a twig in the ground and it used to be where a rose was (so I was hoping for a new one!) Then it turned into the pic above.

It's a cherry, identifying feature is these little glands on the stem - extrafloral nectaries.
