Nostalgic for 70s style red and yellow tulips.

Growing up in the 70s I remember my parents having some tulips that came up every year. Most were vivid red but a few were bright yellow; when you looked inside they had yellow and black centres.
As a child I didn’t like them as I thought a bee had died inside them causing the black and yellow centres!
Now I am feeling nostalgic about them as they take me back to playing outside in our small front garden with my brother sleeping in his pram.
Does anyone know what sort of tulip they were and if you can still buy them? I’ve tried Googling ‘red tulips’ but I can only seem to find fancy new varieties.
I realise it’s not the time of year to buy tulip bulbs.

I know what you mean @PinkCatCushion. An elderly neighbour of mine has the most gorgeous front garden. The beds are currently brimming with beautiful tulips. Proper, old school tulips. I walk past at least twice a day on my dog walks on purpose as they remind me of me great aunt’s garden.

Thank you. In the end I got the Apeldoorn ones and plan to plant them tomorrow! The Red Revival ones look amazing though but I’d already ordered the Apeldoorn ones, which I hope will also be good.
I have a few forget-me-nots, that self seeded, growing in the borders; hopefully the tulips and forget-me-nots will all flower together.

totally agree about the nostalgia! I shamelessly copied a neighbour who has that classic red and yellow Apeldoorn combination in beds, and it just looks so simple and cheerful. And they’re not as expensive as the fancy varieties so you can plant lovely thick swathes. Trade suppliers like Peter Nyssen are great for bulb deals.

OP I can’t offer any suggestions but I had the same reaction to poppies as a child, the red ones with black centres made me feel very uncomfortable. The way I remember it there’s a fuzzy quality to the centre of the flower that does remind me of bees!
