What kind of rose is this in a round flower bed?

A neighbour has a round flower bed similar to ours, and I'd like the same sort of rose they have in it, maybe with a different colour, but I can't get the hang of it. It doesn't seem to grow like a shrub rose, it's sprawling. I'd like one similar but I have poor form when it comes to picking roses, and I've never got the hang of the difference between shrub and bush roses. It seems to be just one rose planted there.

The rose of course doesn't look like that now, the photo was taken a while ago later on in the year - I did post on Mumsnet about it but the thread seems to have vanished.

Acco to Google, it’s a a crape myrtle not a rose, it’s a deciduous shrub , can also be a small tree, and produces. flowers from summer to autumn, and grows in any type of soil.

I can't see too clearly but Flower Carpet roses have that low sprawling habit. They come in various colours. I have had Amber Flower Carpet, it is an excellent free flowering rose.

Redrosesposies · 12/03/2026 15:38

Could be a polyantha type. Look up ground cover or carpet roses.

Allseeingallknowing · 12/03/2026 15:38

It’s not a rose!

Don't know that there really is a clear definition. If I wanted a rose that was like another rose that I was familiar with I'd choose it on the description. Here's your thread!

Ha ha! That is one of my threads about roses, but not the actual one I had in mind - which came with the very same photo attached on this one!

Can anyone raise @Allseeingallknowing 's bombshell observation that this is not a rose?!

It’s not an observation, it’s Google lens!

Yesitsmeimback · 12/03/2026 15:56

@NewspaperTaxis could you ask the neighbour?

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 12/03/2026 16:00

Internet plant recognition is notoriously shit. I think it's a rose. Also from that pic google would be unable to analyse anything useful like leaf shape.
It's a rose.

IHeartFridays · 12/03/2026 16:08

That looks just like my flower carpet rose. It’s a fantastic worker in my garden and just blooms its heart out all summer long. Even if it’s not that, I love mine and would recommend.

NewspaperTaxis · 12/03/2026 17:16

'Flower carpet rose'! What's that when it's at home?!

Does David Austin do such a thing? I don't think they mention it.

I will also look up crape myrtle!

It is totally absolutely completely blindingly obviously a rose. Google lens is talking out of its tiny digital arse.

😁

@NewspaperTaxis Could be 'Carpet Pink' from Harkness Roses.

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 12/03/2026 20:23

@Yamadori is one of the gardening board's experts. If she says it's a rose, it's a rose. 🤨

Seaitoverthere · 12/03/2026 20:46

I think it is a flower carpet rose. I inherited one in the garden in a pot. It was still flowering at Christmas and has a new bud forming I noticed. I think I might want another now I’ve thought about it..

You are too kind!😂😊

By the way OP, judging by the spread of it there maybe several of them in the one big bed.
