Seed Compost

I’m looking to buy some good seed compost. Last year I bought Poundland compost ( I wasn’t driving so no access to garden centres) but it was very fibrous and clumpy and my seeds did not like it. I plan to put what I have left on my borders and buy something else now I am driving again.

Any recommendations?

I've bought it from amazon, otherwise check on-line if, say, B&Q have it in stock at your nearest store before travelling.

I just buy any reasonable brand and sieve it for seed sowing. The main thing is to really keep an eye on watering, as the compost often looks moist on the surface but is as dry as dust underneath. If I can be bothered I mix in some perlite and various other things to improve water retention.

Garden centres often deliver for free if you spend over a certain amount. Amazon is also an option.

Places like B&M sell it. As a pp says, go for a John Innes seed compost. I often mix seed compost with vermiculite.

It really is not worth buying the cheapest stuff, they make compost out of all sorts of crap these days now they aren't allowed to use peat any more.

Fertile Fibre is the best seed compost I have used. I don't get on with the John Innes blends.

Thankyou for everyone’s help.

I like SylvaGrow seed compost.

I got mine at B&Q, 3 for 2 offer! It’s kept indoors at our branch - on the same isle as the pots, trays etc.

We got John Innes Seed compost from Amazon quite recently, it was easier than trawling the garden centres finding it as nowhere in our town sold it.

sprigatito · 06/03/2026 10:58

If you’re using John Innes, mix some vermiculite in as it helps with moisture retention and JI can get very hard and crusty if it dries out.

I am using my own compost this year with a bit of vermiculite mixed in. No idea how it’s going to perform!

I've found the quality of seed compost varies greatly, even within the same brand.
But the best seed compost I have used by far this year is Dobbies organic seed compost.
Soft, fine, no large bits and really reasonably priced.
