I don't want to see my fences so I prefer them to be dark brown and covered in bushes/ foliage.

Happyher · 25/09/2025 16:28

I’ve just painted my northeast facing fence charcoal grey (silver copse by Cuprinol) I plan to have pink & purple tone flowers growing front of it

Neon yellow? Be different!

ItsFineReally · 25/09/2025 16:50

Have you asked ChatGPT (or similar) to mock it up in the different colours you're considering so you can visualise it?

Is a fence a good idea for a "very big" garden?

Me too.

Same here.
Fence treated with clear preserver and then a lovely Beech & Holly hedge planted in front of it, keeps it covered all year.

Paint it a natural mid-to-dark brown colour so it fades into the general background. It's a garden, and presumably the fence is made of wood so a wooden colour is best. It will then blend in and not be noticeable.

A very big fence painted in any other colour will stick out like a sore thumb, and run the risk of being a complete eyesore and will dominate the entire space. Besides, changing a noticeable fence colour to a different one is an absolute bastard of a job. It's not like painting a wall indoors.

stealthninjamum · 26/09/2025 19:33

Op do you have neighbours and do you own the fence? You need to be careful paining a fence as the colour can go through the other side so you should ask the people backing on to you what they think. If it’s their fence they’d be entitled to say that you can’t do it.

Senua yes!

Can’t post a picture yet, as not finished. But my panels are being painted black. Anything planted in front will be a mix of evergreen shrubs and various flowers for colour. The black fence means that what’s planted will really stand out rather than blend in.

dozywelshbird · 30/09/2025 10:50

I have black panels too and the foliage looks lovely against it, it really makes the planting pop, plus makes my garden look bigger

Once you start painting a fence, you’ll have to maintain it. Better to use clear preservative
