Blackberry picking Q

Hi all, the hedgerows round me seem to have lots of blackberries so I was considering taking DC to pick some. But pardon my stupid question here, the red ones? Are they edible also? I originally thought they were unripened blackberries but DH tells me no. Any tips for picking and what to use them for?

I have been picking a small bagful of blackberries on my dog walks and popping them into a container in the freezer.
I had a plan to go out and get a proper amount at the weekend.
To my horror the council had decided to cut back all the brambles along the footpath last Friday!
now I can see all the lovely ripe berries but they are definitely out of reach.
I am off to explore further afield to see if I can find another, accessible blackberry patch!

Make sure you taste test before picking - some bushes are sweeter than others depending on position for sunshine, rain etc. Lots near us are disappointingly small and bitter this year due to lack of rain and hot weather.
Enjoy

Don't pick anything below your knee!

He says he thought they were redcurrants 😂 but once I told him you all said they were, in fact, unripened blackcurrants he has now googled redcurrants and been put right. Every day is a school day!

Are we talking about black currents or blackberries here? Currents do come in different colours, so there are red ones and black ones when ripe. Blackberries get darker and darker as they ripen.

apologies, can see you have a photo and definitely blackberries. But what your husband is saying is correct of currants.

@vdbfamily sorry yes I meant to say blackberries. I had grown blackcurrants this year in my own garden but the birds got to them before I did 🙈🫠

So... not only did he think blackberries were blackcurrants, he though that unripe blackberries were redcurrants? Oh dear. 😂😂

Only pick the ones that come off easily. If you have to tug them they are not ripe, even if they are black.
