Thanks for starting a new thread. Just marking my place.

Churchofthegoddamnwild · 28/05/2025 12:11

I have moved all of my various seedlings out of the greenhouse to harden them off. This is about the sixth day. I think they have got a bit more of a hardening than desirable after a downpour. I'm planning to plant out a few of them today (some cosmos and bees blossom that my mum gave me). I also want to sow a few seeds.

There are also a couple of things I have suddenly decided I want to take out and feel brave enough to do. One is a huge clump of fern that is brown because it has never been in the right place, and the other is a day lily that is so overgrown that it has only produced a single flower. I don't know if today is the day I will do this.

There's also an overgrown border to contend with. In practice I doubt I will do much more than move the hardening off crowd back into the greenhouse tonight...

Mamamia35 · 28/05/2025 13:30

I Chelsea chopped some Erigeron and another shrub that I can’t recall the name off. Hardened off some Cosmos seedlings - hopefully plant them out at the weekend.

ILikeDungs · 28/05/2025 15:50

I planted out many cosmos and malope. After a cup of tea will do the zinnias. I also have a huge pot to plant up with brugmansia, that's after my tea too.

Update:

Tea taken, some zinnias planted. Wanted to clear out the front where the very large pot was to go, looked up and noticed the grape vine shoots were shooting up to the upstairs windows so I brought out my handy extendable chopper DH gave me (for long and boring reasons it is unsafe to use my ladder there) and promptly chopped the electric cord for the mobile repeater that snakes into my bedroom window.

Tools down. Having a cold cider on the naughty step while I think about what I have done.

Zebracat · 28/05/2025 16:31

I watered my greenhouse. I was wearing trackie bottoms with socks over, tshirt jumper and sturdy underwear.. In the few minutes it took, a thousand bastard ants jumped me. I had to strip naked back in the house . Little feckers were everywhere. I may never go back there.

BestIsWest · 28/05/2025 16:35

Mowed lawn, Chelsea chopped the Erigeron as inspired by @Mamamia35. Peeked in the greenhouse and found something had knocked a tray of nicotiana seedlings on the ground, upside down. They weren’t too healthy anyway so I’ve just swept up and scattered what was left in a border.

NeedToKnow101 · 28/05/2025 16:50

First time on a gardening thread I think! We put some succulents from a large pot into the ground and some smaller pots.

I’ve planted Snapdragon Zinnia and Ammi seedlings out went to my favourite nursery and bought the last of my annuals . Also planted two types of Verbena a lovely purple honesty and a Knautia Macedonica.

ArcticBells · 28/05/2025 20:47

@ILikeDungsI’ve given up on cosmos as after all the nurturing, the slugs just devour them. My first time growing zinnias and have planted them out 🤞

Twoshoesnewshoes · 28/05/2025 21:03

Put my lettuce seeds in pots outside
fed the blueberry bushes
fell over

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 28/05/2025 21:05

@Twoshoesnewshoes oh dear. Hope you're OK.

I fall over a lot in the garden. Something about squatting down and planting things and then standing up and trying to use my legs that just doesn't work. Thankfully not ever landed in my plants though. Think that would sting more than the bruises.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 28/05/2025 21:13

Yes exactly that, stood up and leg didn’t work! Fell on to grass though so all good, thanks

Oh, no! Hope you're OK.
Just got back from a city break and watered the violas, replaced the revoltingly stagnant water in the bird bath with fresh water. Currently listening to my resident blackbird singing atop my chimney. Never ceases to amaze me how light it is at this time of year.

Things I've noticed most in five days away: the horse chestnut blossom has gone over, the elderflower blossom had come out (summer starts with elderflower and ends with elderberry) and the hedgerows are still full of cow parsley and hawthorn.

Agapornis · 28/05/2025 22:35

Planted out a Black Lace elderflower - absolutely bargain, post-bank holiday half price £6 at B&Q.
Moved some sad raspberries to make space for the new elderflower.
Deadheaded/removed young rosehips from two roses. Should really look up whether I'm doing that properly...
Tied in two plants, ceratostigma and some wildflower from the pea family.
Dug up some tulip bulbs that were in the wrong place (too dry). Not sure where the right place is yet.
Planted out two bronze and green fennel seedlings, held back two more green ones just in case.
Pondered on where the hell I'm going to plant a hawthorn whip and two pink pelargoniums. Currently watching Chelsea FS and Gardener's World in the hope I'll learn something that'll make my garden look more structured and less "let's have everything".
Rubbed the neighbour's cat's belly.
Told my own cat that no, he can't jump from the back of a chair up on the fence, he's not that athletic and fat. He listened.

I'm a bit ill and should really have stayed in bed but the garden is much nicer, plus, a whole day of gardening, what's not to like. No doubt I'll regret it tomorrow.

BigDahliaFan · 29/05/2025 07:44

Tried to remember when I ordered the plants that are apparently arriving from Thompson and Morgan soon….

surfinia, salvia and meconopsis blue.

Myblueclematis · 29/05/2025 07:57

Yesterday I bought another Salvia for me, one for a friend and hope to plant my one out sometime today, however, the weather is not good at the moment so might have to be tomorrow. Weather looks to be brighter later this afternoon so fingers crossed.

Yesterday I noticed that my runner beans and dwarf beans are just starting to come through. I've planted a tray of extras in case any fail or I can pass on to someone else if they'd like them.

If it does clear up today, I will also repot some azaleas as I now have bags of ericaceous compost in the shed. Had a fabulous display this spring but several need bigger pots for next year.

BestIsWest · 29/05/2025 08:10

Hang on @Agapornis, your cat listened? That’s a first for me! I’ve never heard of one who does that!

Haha he's a good cat! Knows a few commands too. If it makes you feel any better, I have another who has about 1 brain cell and ignores everything I tell him to do.

Churchofthegoddamnwild · 29/05/2025 14:59

First thing this morning I decided to do a big greenhouse clean and re-haul. It was a bit like decorating. You get halfway through and wonder why you started. I am now exhausted. It does however look much nicer and I have moved things round so I can fit a chair in now 😀

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 29/05/2025 15:14

I really wanted a greenhouse but we only had space for either a greenhouse or a swimming pool, and I've taken over the rest of the garden so it only felt fair letting the kids have a pool.

I saw a video of someone with a moss garden this morning, and I've got a little pathway through some trellis arches that I tamped down the weeds with using cardboard last year and its just barren now underneath, and theres a little road just opposite me where the pavement doesn't get used and it is all moss, so I'm considering going and shovelling it up and making my little walkway into a moss garden with some stepping stones.

I'd take a swimming pool over a greenhouse any day! A moss garden sounds pretty

Hedgesgalore · 29/05/2025 16:01

I bought compost, go me 😂
Its raining here.

Yesterday was first dry day this week so I weeded my very difficult front border and chelsea chopped some autumn joy sedum which I stuffed into the gaps that the pulled weeds left.

The aim is to fill the whole thing so there no room for weeds. So far its had about 70 small heathers (all from the reduced shelf), 100 tete a tete bulbs (they gave a fab show) and some odd sedums that were reduced. I'm thinking of putting in my spent tulip bulbs until I can find another filler.

We are garden twins, Vicliz24, like you I have snapdragon zinnia ammi AND verbena and knautia!

Also aster and malope (first time) and cosmos nasturtium and calendula.

I have not had nicotiana in a few years, thinking I should get some to fill in gaps

My slugs must have a taste for something else, they have never so much as looked at my cosmos.

Foreverhappiest · 29/05/2025 18:39

Planted a herb garden. Measured up the back of the garage area to paint with storm dry and ordered storm dry to arrive tomorrow. Will paint Saturday afternoon and then attach a lean to. Then it will be a bike and compost store. That’s the job for the weekend.
