Mulching

I am a very novice gardner so excuse what is probably a stupid question!

Our guinea pigs died recently and we have a lot of hay left over- can I use this a mulch, particularly around my blueberries and strawberries? I have been using grass cuttings on.my flower beds to keep the weeds down but our garden was so over grown when we moved in keeping on top of them is an endless job and I don't want to have to spend a fortune on bark chippings.

Putting straw / hay under strawberries is ideal - the clue is in the name! It keeps the fruit off the ground so it keeps them clean & dry and away from slugs etc.

If you are going to use bark chippings anywhere then do it around your blueberries - they like acid soil, and bark will add to the acidity.

Straw yes, but hay will be chock full of grass seeds so probably not a great idea.
