'Elizabeth' here. All my roses are loving this weather though.

OneGiddyDuck · 18/05/2025 15:24

Same rose, but two different colors!

My first rose that's bloomed is a gorgeous deep burgundy rose called "Matthew's Rose" - it's my first ever attempt at gardening and I bought this rose in memory of my little brother.
I was delighted today to see that it unfurled itself.

Climbing Queen Elizabeth.

Not so much a climber as a tall, stiff thing these days, since the pergola it was attached to fell down.

LibertyLily · 19/05/2025 00:13

Madame Alfred Carriere here, closely followed by Alberic Barbier and Fighting Temeraire. These are all in large pots as our new-to-us garden is just a large-ish courtyard.

We moved from 0.5 acre with 60+ David Austins 😭 and just have ten now plus some unidentified climbers planted by the previous owner.

SabbatWheel · 19/05/2025 00:29

Crown Princess Margareta closely followed by Munstead Wood. Strangely, my Margaret Merrill who is usually way ahead of anything else is sulking and not looking like producing much.

DesparatePragmatist · 19/05/2025 00:30

Albrighton Rambler got going about 10 days ago. The rest are just teasing me with buds, including some of the ones mentioned on this thread - frustrations of a north-facing garden!

First is this highly scented yellow guy, followed by this extremely abundant, rich velvety, red dude.

We inherited around 10 rose bushes in our garden, and sadly, don't know the names of any of them.

Now there are many mysterious things in bloom.

Gertrude Jeckyll. Always first out every year. She smells Devine.

Slightly more in focus...

A cerise climber has been out for a few weeks now. I also have Desdemona in large pots. It's a good year for the roses!

Dunnop · 19/05/2025 01:47

A Shropshire Lad, closely followed by Mortimer Sackler. My roses are super healthy this year.

PoopingAllTheWay · 19/05/2025 01:49

I have no idea what this is, but they are in my garden, its my other halfs nan’s house, so we made sure we left some rose bushes & other things when we over took the house 🌹

Same here and the scent is why I bought her.

HumphreyCobblers · 19/05/2025 07:20

Mme Alfred here, always the first. Closely followed by Phyllis Bide. Now have Constance Spry, Francis Lester and Gertrude Jekyll coming out.

Peggysue14 · 19/05/2025 07:37

Tottering by Gently which is amazing and will produce flowers for ages followed by Madame Alfred Carriere.

HurdyGurdy19 · 19/05/2025 07:40

I've only got one rose, "Imogen", which I bought from David Austen this year. I thought she would spend this year "getting comfortable" and would bloom next year.

No blooms yet, but she's got loads of buds, so I'm hopeful.

AllAroundMyGarden · 19/05/2025 07:56

I have a collection of David Austin.

Wild Edric is always the first to bloom, in early to mid May.
Gertrude Jekyll is a close second, and now Clare is just beginning.

All my others are usually early June.

Myblueclematis · 19/05/2025 08:12

First was Comte de Chambord, second was Gertrude Jekyll and the third one is Ancient Mariner.

Coming in at fourth place hopefully will be either Gabriel Oak or Charles Darwin.

QueenOfSwedenRose · 19/05/2025 14:01

Some lovely pictures and I've looked up some of the other ones too.

I've got 4 roses and I'm planning to get one more. (Small garden.)
My twilight zone (burgundy) and belle de jour (yellow) look like they will bloom next. Then hopefully my St Ethelburga (light pink.)
The last one I buy will probably be an apricot one or maybe the new stripey David Austin Kings Rose which I like the look of. It would be my only one without a strong scent. But maybe worth it for the lovely look of it.

How do I know? I inherited a bedraggled rose bush when we moved in, and I'm fairly neglectful of it other than a hack back a couple of times a year after flowering, it seems to love it and it's full of flowers.
The patio rose MIL bought me is in bud but not flowering yet and the lovely miniature rose I planted last year got dug up by squirrels.
If I post a picture will someone be able to identify it?

TheCurious0range · 19/05/2025 14:10

Any ideas?

How lovely, though! I’d love to have inherited mysterious roses rather than a sloping field of waist-high weeds and what I can only assume is a Victorian kitchen midden (lots of meat bones and oyster shells).

pinkfloralcurtains · 19/05/2025 14:15

“Charlotte’s Rose” has been the first for us this year. I can see the iceberg standards are also starting to flower.

Shuttered · 19/05/2025 14:15

I only have two rose varieties — Rambling Rector, which has a few initial blooms, and a Kiftsgate I only planted recently to cover an ugly wall.

This thread has reminded me to buy some more. If anyone can recommend something vigorous and scented to cover walls and fences (I have a lot of tall walls and fences), I’m all ears.
