Summer song here, a few days ago but now we have Gertrude Jekyll, Gabriel Oak, Claire Austin and today Boscobel which is so lovely! Still waiting on a few more - they are my babies and I go out with my cup of tea in my dressing gown first thing each morning to check on them 😍

Here’s my Boscobel, one of our new roses this year

My first was ‘Oh Wow’ which is giving me its first proper show this year and I’m so happy.
Second was my ‘Zephrine Drouhin’ which smells divine.
I have a massive rambler (unknown name - came with the house) which is showing signs of breaking into bloom in the next few days and a ‘Generous Gardener’ by the front door which is covered in buds. Exciting times 😃

A DA climber called Malvern Hills. Lovely little pale yellow flowers. Closely followed by Generous Gardener.
I've also got a yellow and a pink climber that have been in so long I've forgotten what they are.

Tranquility followed by Ferdinand Pichard, which has flowered for the first time.

Kew Gardens (DA) closely followed by Eustice Vye (DA), York Minster (Harkness), Ruby Rambler & Rose for Hope.
Ginger Syllabub (Harkness), Tottering By Gently (DA) & Gertrude Jekyll (DA) are soon to follow.

Iceberg climber on a south east facing garage wall is in full bloom. Sadly it has blackspot that I'm struggling to manage so it will probably look awful once this first flush is over. Blush Noisette has just started to flower near the back door and the scent is glorious.

I don’t know what this is but it seems to respond well to being ignored. Although I did give a water the other day.

Jude the obscure climbing.

I have one rose still to come out as the buds are not that big and tightly closed at the moment.

When I retired I was given a garden voucher by one of the departments I worked within and I bought a Warm Wishes rose with it. It's not heavily scented but quite pretty, it's peachy/pinky when in flower.

I think it will be a good week before I see anything resembling a flower.

QueenOfSwedenRose · 20/05/2025 12:36

I'll post a photo of my other three roses when they bloom.

Just noticed a rose sawfly flying round Barbara 😠

I came home this week after 10 days away. My 5 standards were in full bloom - Olivia Rose Austin. Had to deadhead yesterday and filled 6 buckets, still a number of blooms and plenty of buds left.

My Gabriel Oaks (12 shrubs), Tranquility (1 shrub) and Generous Gardner (2 climbers) all have plenty of buds on, so am looking forward to them opening. The scent of the GO and GG are both gorgeous.

QueenOfSwedenRose · 23/05/2025 13:51

After my Desdemona blooming, the others are all taking their time. I'm seeing a lot of roses in bloom in people's front gardens when travelling around.

@AllAroundMyGarden my wild Edric is also the first and blooming well 😊. Impatiently waiting to see how my Emma Bridgewater unfurls.

Scentsation decided to open up today. So beautiful.

Oh wow that is gorgeous!!

I've looked and I can't see any scars from eggs being laid but she's enormous, I could easily have missed them. If I have an I do have a hatch of sawfly caterpillars I'll try to look on the bright side. She's big enough to spare a few leaves and the dunnocks and tits that forage around her will appreciate the snack. She's still not flowered but I don't think it'll be long.

Olivia Rose Austen was the first one for me. It’s been flowering since the start of May, which I thought was early and this thread kind of confirms that!

Nearly all my roses are flowering this week, apart from Alnwick (always late) and the Generous Gardener (growing against a wall that gets a limited amount of direct sunlight every day)

My favourite of all my roses is Scepter’d Isle (pictured). It’s not the most floriferous, but it’s just SO pretty! Strawberry Hill is another favourite, as is Boscobel, Desdemona…I could go on!

Charles Darwin now blooming … this one was in a ridiculously skinny stem and basically lying on the ground so I’ve cut it and brought it inside. It smells like sherbet lemons.

My Olivia Rose Austin standard was first, followed by Eustacia Vye and Claire Austin next.

My ‘Super Trouper’

PermanentTemporary · 23/05/2025 22:42

'Golden Showers' which I've mentally renamed 'Lovely Golden Rose' as I'm not as innocent as the cultivator.

@Shuttered Have a look at Malvern Hills - a PP has one up thread - I had it climbing over an arch in my previous garden, it smells amazing, pale yellow and beautiful.
