Calling on the power of Mumsnet... call you solve the mystery of the unidentified plant ?

If anyone can answer this it will be MN. On going up t' town this w/e. I passed a church with an 8ft shrub outside it. Said shrub had a cream/greeny flower - 4 petals - in quite a geometric shape (kite..ish). The plant was close to the edge (ignore pavement) of the A3 somewhere between Clapham and the Royal Hospital (going that way it was on the right). For the life of me I cannot find this in any of my books and no-one in RL recognises my description - can MN solve the mystery ??

Lots of flowers?

How big flowers

some sort of clematis?

climber?

what sort of branches?

Whizzed past at 20mph - DH not prepared to stop for a cutting/gawp.

Circumference of flower approx 2 to 3 "

Leaves not noticed.

Clematis - no - too shrub like

branches - no idea

good show of flowers - top of shrub - not touching but good impact

Magnolia Grandiflora?

Philadelphus? I suspect flowers on that are too small to be what you describe.

Or a camellia?

Have a weird feeling about choisya - but can't find a suitable variety in a book

SalV I will have to look that one up - If like other Magnolias - out too late for London - even for unsheltered spot here in the sticks

SalV - Not fluffy enough for a camillia - really quite a precise sort of flower

Choisya seems to have more petals.

If you put 'kite shaped flower' into google, one of the pictures it comes up with is of Bougainvillea - could it be something related, I wonder?

oggsfrog - i would not have noticed it if it had been a hydrangea - they are a pet hate of mine. I try killing one every year in the garden, but it seems to like the "vigourous pruning" it gets

It was this link that I found on Google - so not exactly, just the mention of kite shaped flowers.

Re Bougainvillea - not sure of the scale in the picture - but petals too close together - think 4 pointed star - points being made of kite shaped petals

Solanum - flowers too small and not rigid enough

I think I can even picture the flowers you are talking about... Or are they leaves that are those kind of flower-like bits?

But I'm buggered if I know or can find it...
