Replacing decking with grass

I have a courtyard garden which is solely decking. Would it be difficult to change it to grass? What would it entail? It's north-west-facing, and in a semi-basement area, would it be a no-go?

I’ve just done this - grass is coming up.

Depends what's under the deck. Is it soil or concrete?

Is it mostly in shade all day? Most grass needs sun.

As pps said — what’s is underneath the decking and how much, if any, sun does the courtyard get if it’s northwest in aspect and in a semi-basement?

As PPs have said, if it’s mostly shaded it’s likely to be a patchy, boggy nightmare. If you want green, reduce the size of the deck or replace it with a small patio, and plant with shade-loving plants in raised beds.

I did this. There was soil underneath the decking though. I just chucked a load of compost on top and fast growing grass seed and it came up really well. It does need sun and watering though.

Thanks for the responses! It’s concrete underneath and it does get some sun - probably only around 3-4 hours a day direct sun though. I do have shade-loving plants around the edges but I miss the smell of soil and grass. Wonder if I could make a small area in the sunniest part …

That’s going to be a massive job if you’ve got to remove concrete.

Very true.
