I've lived here for a year and not trimmed back these bushes/shrubs. Do you do it in winter when they're all bare? Or another time? Obviously not when they're flowering

For most things you cannot go far wrong pruning them just after they have finished flowering.

For the two red leaf shrubs you have there - they are photinias and are as hard as nails - you can cut them back whenever you fancy it. Just be careful in case birds are nesting inside.

use an app to get the names of the plants - Flora Incognita is a good free one.

then google the plant name + RHS and you will find the official Royal Horticultural Society info on that plant which will tell you how to look after it and when to prune it.

prune after flowering is common for many shrubs. some prefer prune in early spring (february). The RHS will tell you.

The white plant is exochorda (the bride) I think . The other might be photinia. both should be pruned in June.
