Alternatives to grass lawn - ground cover plants

We currently have a small, paved courtyard type garden, and would like to pull up about a 3x3m section and plant something like a lawn. For various reasons we don't want grass, partly because we don't have anywhere to store a mower and don't want the hassle of mowing such a small space. So we'd like to plant some kind of low-growing ground cover.

The requirements would be:
Can grow in very chalk-heavy soil
Can withstand being walked on
Doesn't require mowing

The garden is South-facing but sheltered, so is sunny when the sun is high in the sky, but shaded when it's low.

Any ideas / success stories if you've done similar?

Clover is very hardy, bounces back after being walked on, doesn’t really need mowing and the bees love the flowers.
