What are your absolute FAVE top 3 plants/flowers

Just for fun!

If you had to pick your top 3 favourite flowers, plants, shrubs or trees, what would you pick?

For me (it took a while to decide!):

  1. Amethyst lips, salvia. I love this because it seems to flower forever in my garden, smells amazing and doesn’t seem to require much care from me.
  2. Honeysuckle, the white and yellow one (not sure of the proper name!). I just love how fragrant it is. When I’m on a walk I always smell it before I see it.
  3. Anemone ‘Mr Fokker’ and ‘sylphide’. They are like poppies but blue and pink. They are quite tall so stand out in my borders and produce the most beautiful flowers in spring.

Looking forward to hearing what everyone else picks 😃

Hollyhocks - halo apricot
Dahlias
Rose - For Your Eyes Only

towelonfloor · 15/04/2025 13:19

hydrangeas
Ceanothus
wisteria
delphiniums

I know it's not 3!

longtompot · 15/04/2025 13:26

Oh gosh, that's a hard one!

erm, ok

tree - Silver Birch
scented - honeysuckle
flower - peony

BigDahliaFan · 15/04/2025 13:35

I love cosmos - partly because I lived for a while somewhere they selfseeded around and grew like weeds by the side of the road. So frothy and beautiful.

Dahlias - I plant them for my DH who loves a super blowsy 'proper' flower and doesn't really get subtlety in flowers....

Poppies - heroin poppies - I love how the bees get stuck into them and go endlessly round and round getting dizzier and dizzier.

NamechangeJunebaby · 15/04/2025 13:42

Glam rock hydrangeas - stunning colours!
salvia hot lips - cherry. Joyful to look at but the smell is vaguely like cat pee (to me) so best admired from a distance
cosmos and echinacea - grow the former but seem to kill the latter, but I love these flowers.

Pomegranatemum · 15/04/2025 13:42

Ooo, good question!

Not very imaginative but:

  • rose - anything red, pink or peach with strong fragrance
  • any hollyhock
  • any foxglove
You’ve made me want to go to the garden centre…

Frangipani tree with the more rounded flowers
Honeysuckle
Sweet peas

That's off the cuff thinking. There are just too many to choose from. But frangipani flowers are definitely there.

Erigeron and wild strawberries - mostly for the nostalgia of sitting on sunny stone steps outside my gran's kitchen, where this combination had taken over. Loved searching for the tiny wild strawberries among the froth of flowers

Magnolia tree in bloom - feels somehow alien. Apparently they existed before bees existed, so they evolved to be pollinated by beetles

Maidenhair fern

TreatYoSelf2025 · 15/04/2025 13:52

Hydrangeas
Ranunculus
Dahlias

Maggiethecat · 15/04/2025 13:53

Cosmos, dahlias, salvia

AlmostCutMyHairToday · 15/04/2025 14:32

For those who love Hydrangeas - the Azores has an amazing proliferation of these!

towelonfloor · 15/04/2025 14:35

Just googled that @AlmostCutMyHairToday looks amazing. Blues are my absolute favourite

Pabbel · 15/04/2025 14:40

Daffodils.
Bluebelles,
Oak trees

Sandandsea123 · 15/04/2025 14:42

Peony
daffodil
eucalyptus

MichelleCancelled · 15/04/2025 14:45

Tulips
Hydrangea
Verbascum

Xiaoxiong · 15/04/2025 14:58

Anemone
Gardenia
Philadelphus, particularly "Belle Etoile" and "Virginal" for the gorgeous scent

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 15/04/2025 15:04

Those small scented iris reticulata that flower in February for the early bumble bees.
Pulsatilla vulgaris the purple pasqueflowers
Ranunculus

Those are my current top three, but they may have changed by tomorrow, the competition is fierce.

Cuppa2sugars · 15/04/2025 15:08

this is a hard question so i would say the 3 that come to my mind for reliability in my challenging garden are :

stonecrop autumn joy
hellebours
hydrangeas

but i can think of many more !

CrepuscularCritter · 15/04/2025 15:10

longtompot · 15/04/2025 13:26

Oh gosh, that's a hard one!

erm, ok

tree - Silver Birch
scented - honeysuckle
flower - peony

That's my three too. With delphiniums a close runner up.

Manif3st101 · 15/04/2025 15:11

I’ll stick to the trees as I couldn’t pick three plants!

Japanese Acer - any variety
cherry trees in bloom
magnolia trees in bloom

FizzingAda · 15/04/2025 15:33

Silver birch (followed by oak)
Maidenhair fern
Delphiniums

Titsywoo · 15/04/2025 15:38

Erysium Bowles Mauve - it flowers pretty much all year around and the bees love it
English lavender - I just love the beauty of the colour
Bleeding heart - just so unusual, I just wish they flowered for longer

I've based this on things I can grow in my garden - if it was anything in the world it might be different choices but that would be much harder!

Mrsplants · 15/04/2025 15:58

@titsywooBowles mauve would have been my number 4! It’s also such a vibrant colour.

I recently planted my first ever bleeding heart bare roots.. no idea what to expect! How long do they flower for? I got them as a read they do well in shade and I need plants for my shady border

Zinnias - watching the development of the bud and the stages the flower goes through as it opens is endlessly fascinating.

Echinops - ditto, plus bees absolutely love them

Rose - it has to be, there are so many varieties although my favourites tend to big yellow ones.

HolidayHattie · 15/04/2025 16:23

BigDahliaFan · 15/04/2025 13:35

Poppies - heroin poppies - I love how the bees get stuck into them and go endlessly round and round getting dizzier and dizzier.

Heroin poppies!!! 😁

I love opium poppies too, especially the single white or pale pink ones with purple spots. Not so much the fully double pom poms.

Chillies are my obsession, they have to be in my three top plants.

I would love a silver-leafed tree or shrub like eleagnus Quicksilver or a silver pear but they don't like my soil.
