Foxgloves

Hi all,

Does anybody know if I buy foxglove plug plants and plant them now, whether they would flower this summer?

I think that they flower in the second year but I am not sure if they are a plug plant whether this would be classed as year 2?

Thanks

They might flower if you get them in now? I’ve moved loads of foxgloves around in my garden in the last week or so and have wondered the same thing, but thought I’d take a chance.

Billybagpuss · 08/04/2025 09:35

More likely they will flower next year

Somethingthecatdraggedin7 · 08/04/2025 10:02

Better to buy mature plants which will flower this year and then spread new plants for next year.

Mrsplants · 08/04/2025 18:53

Thanks all. I have bought some that are a year old and some that are plugs, so we will see what they both do!

It'll be better long term if the plugs do flower next year, then you'll have a good cycle of self seeding- the mature ones set seed this year, the plugs next year, and so on.

I am looking to buy some mature foxgloves too, can I ask where you purchased them from please?

Mrsplants · 14/04/2025 09:04

Hi @Sunflowerhelp I bought both the mature ones and plugs from eBay. These are the mature ones. They have not arrived yet as they are posted on Mondays/tuesdays so I will get them this week.

Hi @Sunflowerhelpi am going to post two photos. The first is one of the mature plants that has just arrived from the seller I shared. They look healthy. Some are smaller than others. The seller gave me a free plant and 1000 foxglove seeds free, which was a nice surprise!
the second photo I will post is to show a comparison with a foxglove ‘large plug’ I bought from a different seller. As you can see there’s not much size difference between the ‘mature plants’ that have arrived today and the ‘large plugs’ that arrived a few days ago.

Yes I had tiny mini plugs last spring and they flowered in the autumn.

Sunflowerhelp · 17/04/2025 20:07

Thank you that is incredibly helpful. Will the large plugs also flower this year? They both look healthy.

Gretnaglebe · 17/04/2025 20:11

I buy a couple of trays of foxgloves from b and Q each year. They bloom this year and seed next year. I pay about £10 a tray for 6

That looks like it will flower this year to me. I've found the seeds pretty easy to grow and that way you get more choice of colour. If you planted seeds now you'd have some for next year.

My local garden centre had lots of mature foxgloves that I expect would flower this year.

Mrsplants · 17/04/2025 20:54

@Sunflowerhelpi messaged the seller of the large plugs and they said they would flower this year but it’s not guaranteed. I have put the link to the seller below. To me, I can’t really see any difference between these large plugs and the mature plants 😊 fingers crossed I get flowers from both!

@Toohottocleani am going to try planting the seeds this year. How do you normally grow them?

I grow mine in seed trays in a greenhouse then transplant them out but you can direct sow them too. Alternatively when your Foxglove has gone over and you cut it down, shake it over the patch you would like them to grow.
