Now that my bluebells are beginning to come up, I realise this is a completely different plant.

It’s spring in up all over my garden, would appreciate some help!

the leaves are quite rusty, and one of the plants had a green flower-type thing last summer. Sorry that’s not much info to go on!

Possibly Pendulous sedge? It produces arching flower stems which go to seed, and spreads easily. Can be a problem to get rid of!

Do the leaves smell of garlic if you rub them ? Could be three cornered leek

Thighdentitycrisis · 22/03/2025 15:43

Is it day lily?

It looks like it to me and it's a bit of a menace, or at least it is in my garden. Pull it up if you still can, chop the reat soen regularly to discourage it, I would.

Carex pendula (pendulous sedge) was my first thought as well. Fucking nightmare in my garden 🤦‍♀️

Thanks everyone for your comments. I've Googled them all now and I think it's the astelia. The leaves are spot on and when it flowered last year, the flowers are green and not petally, if that makes sense!

I spent a lot of time yesterday pulling it out of flowerbeds but now I see it's something people buy. Maybe I'll leave a couple of them and keep an eye on it spreading.

If it is seeded around your garden it’s Carex pendula as already suggested. Nuisance in a domestic garden. The seedlings have three leaves to start with. I expect you will find plenty of them too. It’s not Astelia.
