Right now, who would like to talk to me about rhubarb?

Bought one in a fit of excitment at the weekend (I know, I live on the edge)
I want to keep it in a pot.
What does it like (sun/shade/water/big vs little pot etc)

Do I need to put something over the top to force it?

It likes to put down deep deep roots. I moved mine once and ended up digging down to armpits depth to try and get all the root out and didnt succeed. Mine grows in sandy soil (but with a high water table) in a very sunny spot. if it gets too dry it does wilt but it always grows absolutely massive about 2mx2m and sometimes to waist height.

Too late to force it this year and I wouldnt next year either as it will run out of energy very quickly. Don't pull any stalks this year and only a few next year. Only force every other year at most.

sorry to hijack but what do you mean by force

Force is to get it to mature earlier and if you force one year you shouldnt pick the next.

Rhubarb also needs lots of compost under it when planting. adn as someone said no picking in year one and only springly in year two.

Its yummy tho Love rhubarb
