How is everyone's pot lasagnes coming along?

For the first time I attempted a pot lasagne a couple of months ago. Perhaps it was too ambitious for a newbie gardener like myself. I can't even remember what I planted with my tulips but I do know each pot has three different flower bulbs. So far I have seen some green and some greenish brown shoots emerge but nothing else.

Anyone else had more progress? Or is this what I should expect?

I’ve got barely anything happening in mine. A couple of weedy green shoots, is all.

Can’t remember what this time last year was looking like, but I remember we returned from a holiday in late March and they were spectacular.

Some of my shoots in one pot look a greenish brown compared to others which are a strong green. Is that normal?

That sounds about right to me. I have three or four pot lasagnes I potted up about three years ago and they come up each year. Currently have some tulip stalks, daffodil stalks and some skinny ones that I think are little blue things or maybe crocus. The lasagnes are a great investment!

This winter, I planted cyclamen in the tops of the lasagne pots for winter colour and the cyclamen have died off right on time for the bulbs to come through. Love it!

I added cyclamen and Heather too and only just removed them last week. They were pretty to look at when washing up through the kitchen window.

I look for shoots daily on mine! I’ve got 4 noses poking through this morning, up from two yesterday. (Very excited!!)

I've got iris reticulata in my top layer, they're starting to flower.

Iwiicit · 05/02/2025 23:57

I planted up loads of pots and put bulbs in the ground too in November.
At the time I didn't bother labelling anything and assured myself I would remember exactly what was where. Yeah right. I haven't got a clue, but I have plenty of snowdrops, 1 crocus with a flower bud and hundreds of green shoots appearing. I'm very excited to see what will appear! This scenario happens with me every single year. I have the memory of a goldfish but it gives me a thrill when things appear.

Do you all water your pots or do anything to encourage them to grow? So far I can just see a couple of shoots poking out

I can't for the life of me remember what I planted either, except for tulips on the bottom layer.
I have four pots so let's see what comes up - if it does and I haven't totally messed up.

They may need watering if there's a prolonged dry period, but I don't think that's happened anywhere in the U.K. this winter. Worth keeping an eye on through spring.

Feed when there are leaves if you want the bulbs to last more than one season, whether in the pots or planted out.

Ilovemytulips · 06/02/2025 08:49

Thank you
I can understand why images are currently not allowed or I would have loved to have seen everyone's pots. I'm sure one of mine had snowdrops but I can't see any.

I've done pot lasagne for tulips for about five or six years and always been successful. This year though, I just planted around 30 bulbs in one layer to see how they come up. I mix lots of grit into the compost too to help with drainage.

I have six large tubs of tulips and after planting them, I gave them a liquid feed, if I remember correctly, Monty on Gardener's World said to give them a feed once planted.

So far all the pots have leaves coming up and are looking good. I also have the pots in pot holders that I bought online, the heavy duty ones to keep them above the ground to help with drainage.

I live in the far south on the coast.

Ilovemytulips · 06/02/2025 08:54

I think I need to do that for next year, mix grit and perhaps get some pot feet to lift them off the ground.

Mine had yellow crocus open yesterday, purple ones look like they will open today, but it is in a very sheltered full sun position in the south west, so expect it to be a couple of weeks ahead.

Mine is sheltered but not full sun
I might move them around to see if it makes a difference
Also we have frost this morning

I’ve got potfuls of crocuses and iris reticulata. Daffs tête à tête about to open I think. Then it’s going to be a longish wait for all the tulips, alliums and bigger irises. I’m in London, pots are in full sun, sheltered and on benches so not sitting on cold patio.

CantStopBuyingSeeds · 06/02/2025 19:13

I bought a ready planted one from Costco (Peony so will it flower this year? Who knows) so I'm fully expecting it to succeed at some point because it wasn't me who planted it! 🤣
There's a tiny bit of green coming up but I've got it covered in mesh to protect it from the fluffy tailed critters 🐿️

Ilovemytulips · 06/02/2025 21:13

Has anyone tried the sunflower kits that come in pots? I saw some in Asda today for I think £6 and was in two minds about purchasing.

OP posts:
Koulibiak · 07/02/2025 16:25

@Ilovemytulips I’m not familiar with the kits, and I haven’t grown sunflowers, but I always thought they are very easy to grow from seeds. You might get better value buying just the seeds of the variety you want, planting them in small nursery pots (eg 9cm pots) in April, then transplanting them in the ground a few weeks later. If you sow them in batches every couple of weeks, you will get a long growing season - provided they are in full sun and have the right nutrients.

Ilovemytulips · 08/02/2025 09:22

Images are back! These are how my pots are looking currently, not very exciting. I have moved them to a sunnier spot now.

Here are some of mine earlier today 🙂

Not the best weather - crocuses shut down in the cold and rain - but still bringing me lots of joy every time I look out. I love those irises

Thank you, they were a job lot on eBay! who would get rid of pots like this? I don’t understand ☺️

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 08/02/2025 23:57

What do you all mean by pot lasagnes ?
I'm not a gardener but feel I ought to show a bit more interest in it.
