How is everyone's pot lasagnes coming along?

Ilovemytulips · 05/02/2025 08:29

For the first time I attempted a pot lasagne a couple of months ago. Perhaps it was too ambitious for a newbie gardener like myself. I can't even remember what I planted with my tulips but I do know each pot has three different flower bulbs. So far I have seen some green and some greenish brown shoots emerge but nothing else.

Anyone else had more progress? Or is this what I should expect?

Intrigued as I thought this was about food but it's obviously not !

What do you all mean by pot lasagnes ?
I'm not a gardener but feel I ought to show a bit more interest in it.

It's where you plant bulbs in a pot in layers, the ones that need to go deepest first.
So it may be some or all (depending on pot size and tastes) tulips, daffodils, grape hyacinths, crocuses, iris reticulata....is there anything I've forgotten (or never thought to include?)

Ilovemytulips · 09/02/2025 09:29

Anyone else's look similar to mine or have I done something wrong. Mine look very amateur compared to @Koulibiak

@Ilovemytulips thank you but I don’t think I deserve the praise! It’s also my first time with bulb lasagnes. With regard to growth, I planted mine in September, so they’ve got a good 2-3 months more growth than yours, if you planted them two months ago. Whereabouts in the country are you? I’m in London and my garden is a hotspot, so things grow quickly.

sophi1995 · 09/02/2025 17:25

It's very early yet, they'll flower when they're ready. ☺️ Most of my pots look similar to yours although my early daffodils are flowering since Christmas Eve, they're starting to look a bit ratty now though.

I can see hyacinths starting to poke up and some tulip foliage. I was expecting a bit more signs of life from my crocus by now but I did plant them late. My muscari foliage came up very early and got munched by rabbits (thought they were rabbit proof but I guess the rabbits were very hungry), hopefully that will manage to recover. Some pots are showing no signs of life at all on the surface but if I gently brush away the top later of compost I can see green shoots getting ready to come up and greet the world!

Just now seeing some green shoots in my lasagna pots. Crocuses are out in force in the lawn though.

mummymummymummummum · 11/02/2025 13:06

Here is a photo of mine to help you feel better @Ilovemytulips 🤣 These are a selection of tulips, daffodils, hyacinth and muscari, mostly from my Rose Press Garden subscription 💜

I’m in a new build property, so starting my garden from scratch, which is very exciting! Bulb-wise I have also planted a lot of crocus in my front lawn, and narcissus, tulips and alliums. So am on constant bulb watch. Very exciting, but also nervy. I’m hoping everything is a little late because it’s all new this year…

I planted similar to you but no daffodils. How is your crocus lawn coming along? Thank you for sharing and trying to make me feel better 😂

It looks awful! I walked all over it whilst planting, and it’s covered in small patches of compost from where I back filled the holes. Oh, and it’s patchy anyway, because I’m slowly converting it to clover, but the patches I missed last spring and re sowed late summer are teeny tiny clover shoots that you can’t see.

No crocus shoots poking through. I did plant them late though. Bulbs were sprouting so fingers crossed they’ll come.

I ventured out into the front garden today to remove some cat poo annoyingly, I hardly go there it's quite small and I spotted shoots all along the wall. They must have planted by the previous owner, however nothing grew there last year so I'm a little baffled.
Does it look like daffodils?

Looks like they could well be daffodils. Strange that they weren’t there last year!

Or the year before as we have had two springs in this new house now. Either way I was pleased to see them. Whatever it is, it's made far more progress than my pots that I spent ages on!

I had a look at mine yesterday when I was down the garden, they are all doing well but some are further ahead than others.

I have large pots of tulips and I also plant forget me nots in with them so when they come up, it looks really pretty with the tulips above a froth of pale blue spilling over the edge of the pots.

I do have much smaller pots that have dwarf daffs, forget me nots, miniature tulips and muscari in, they too are doing well and I do have the start of heads on some of the dwarf daffs.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/02/2025 09:13

My iris reticulata are the same very pale blue as @Koulibiak has, but I don't have as many in each pot and the other bulbs aren't nearly as far up so they look a bit sparse. Pretty flowers though I think I prefer the deeper blue ones, I've got a few of those in last year's pots.

Hedgesgalore · 12/02/2025 09:27

My layered pot is ahead with the crocus.
My tulip and daff pots are coming through nicely.

The daffs and tulips in the border are further ahead.

After my tulips have withered they get put (as they are in the pot) into my borders. If they come back great, if not it was worth a go. It worked last year, Menton tulips, so 🤞🏻

mummymummymummummum · 13/02/2025 12:50

Lots of tips poking through this morning! Hopefully this is a good sign! I also realise these pots were getting blasted with output air from my ASHP (ie very cold air because it has had all the warmth taken out) so I’ve moved them.

It’s wet, muddy and cold so haven’t ventured out to check my lawn or borders yet 😆

That sounds about right to me. I have three or four pot lasagnes I potted up about three years ago and they come up each year. Currently have some tulip stalks, daffodil stalks and some skinny ones that I think are little blue things or maybe crocus. The lasagnes are a great investment!

This winter, I planted cyclamen in the tops of the lasagne pots for winter colour and the cyclamen have died off right on time for the bulbs to come through. Love it!

Oh can you just leave the pot for next year and the same bulbs will sprout, like in the ground?!

mine are sprouting lots of green, am mega excited cos I’ve never done it before either

Koulibiak · 28/02/2025 17:20

@Ilovemytulips how are your pots coming along? I finally got my first overlap between two flowers today - and spotted the first bees of the season around the little daffodils

Ilovemytulipss · 01/03/2025 09:35

They look lovely! My issue is I can't remember what I planted apart from tulips!
Currently looking like this

Looks like hyacinths?

Yes I think it is! I'm sure I got the blue ones.

Chasingsquirrels · 01/03/2025 09:44

This is one of mine from last year or the year before.
There is at least 1 iris reticulata, hyacinths and maybe something else.
I'd forgotten about it till I went round the side of the house midweek.
Soil needs to be higher in the pot!

And a random pot that I think I must have shoved a load of iris reticulata bulbs in when I was clearing, along with some forget-me-not.
