Ideas to make gravel area more attractive

We have a huge gravelled area behind our house, we are planning building a double garage in a couple of years but for the next 2 summers we need it to look presentable. Last summer it was full of weeds and looked a right mess, too big to weed by hand and have animals so don't want to use chemicals. Was thinking of maybe seeding it with something low growing to cover the area? Would wildflower seed take maybe?? There is old weed membrane under the gravel so no actual soil.

Salt is quite good at weed suppression, if you would be ok with that and animals.
Pots of plants, that can be moved to another part of the garden when building commences.

I've just bought a packet of rockcress to try and fill a patch round the compost bin, that has patches of week membrane around it, and the weeds are growing stronger than anything planted. For a couple of quid, I'm giving it a go this year.
