What is this on my little apple tree and do I need to worry?

I planted the tree last winter and it has seemed healthy in general but the trunk has started exuding this orange stuff - a fungal infection? It’s weeping and bits are falling off onto the soil.
Does anyone know what it is or whether I need to do anything?
Thanks!

Is it just a wound through the bark and sap is leaking out? Can you clean it up and seal the would to stop it losing too much sap.

I'm not sure. I think it's more likely to be a fungal infection - I've had various fruit trees but not had anything like this but I'm aware of the term "apple canker" and cytospora. If it was me I'd scrape it back (try and remove it without possibly spreading it around) and back to good healthy looking wood and I'd also have a look to see if any kind of insect had bored into it - treat with a fungicide and also have a look around the garden at other nearby branches and other trees to see if there are any other signs of anything similar. Hopefully someone here will know exactly what it is.
