so what can I sow in my grotty hedgerow?

next to our lawn there is a bit of soil probably about 10-12 inches wide, going into a hedgerow

can't continue the grass as the soil is on a slope (next door's garden is higher than ours) so dh can't mow it easily (and believe me, with dh's mowing enthusiasm being as it is, it needs to be easy )

so I was there weeding it today thinking wouldn't it be good if I could just sow some seeds in it as I go, seeing as it is seed-sowing time, something quick and easy, that doesn't want full sun, and they would grow instead of the current crop of dandelions and bits of grassy weedy stuff

any suggestions?

Do you want something permanent, or just a quick fix? I sow nasturtiums under our mixed hedge & they cover the ground well & often end up climbing up the hedge - sometimes they come back next year, sometimes they only last one year (not sure if that's down to the weather or the type of nasturtium)

nasturtiums a good idea, they're quite rufty tufty aren't they so if dh caught them with the mower they'd recover

Permanent is dh spending all weekend putting in proper stone edging. I'm sure he wouldn't mind doing it but I can't be tossed entertaining the kids all day while he does. After two years of hard landscaping, I'm aiming for 'fun in the garden' this year rather than every sunny day being the cue for me to shout 'please stay away from daddy's sharp tools'
