Why don't slugs eat the weeds?

I'm over run with slugs & snails this year, I've lost most of my plants & vegetables & their now munching my dahlias & lillies as they come up but they don't touch the weeds that are sat next to the plants, why not?

If they ate the weeds as fast as the expensive plants I might feel slightly guilty at the amount I'm killing every night in the beer traps.

I've heard that melting petroleum jelly in a pan, mixing in salt and then painting on your pots will deter them, has anyone tried this.

I've got all my pots on pot feet and the susceptible plants under plastic bottles until they're bigger. My daughter's hosta, Carl, comes in at night. Also lots of slug traps with water/tesco-brand marmite (thanks to whoever suggested that) or water/flour/sugar/yeast. Drop any live slugs in soapy water to kill 'em. Apparently, the big leopard slugs will eat the harmful species, so leave them.

Wash hands after touching them.

I found slug slime on the leaves on a seedling I was growing on an upstairs windowsill.

Oh maybe I should have kept him/her?

What on earth is that?!

It is a slow worm.
A legless lizard, they are well cute and eat slugs.

Thank god for that. I thought it was some new form of giant mutant slug.

I found a slug so big the other week at our allotment I thought it was a mouse! Leopard slug, curled up in an old sandpit. Should have taken a picture before DS wanged it over the wall (not into someone else's plot - there's a railway on one side).

I could have been in the Guinness Book of Records with that massive slimy bastard.

They eat other slugs so you should have kept that one in your garden

I think I'm winning the battle 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 10pm every night out into garden, gloved hand armed with torch and a large tub of Saxo

MushMonster · 11/06/2024 22:36

Because the weeds are not enough pretty and expensive for the slugs. They do have high standards, you know! The more you paid for the plany, the tastier it is to them.....

BloodyHellKenAgain · 11/06/2024 22:55

Slugs don't eat weeds because they are utter, utter bastards.

I fear you have nailed it.

My gardening has become more gastropod-friendly since I discovered that slugs can be put to work in the compost bins.

SnapdragonToadflax · 12/06/2024 10:56

What do people do with the dead slugs in beer/marmite traps? Garden waste bin?

Maggiethecat · 12/06/2024 11:10

Tip them out for the birds. Please, don’t tell me that this bad for them!

Chypre · 12/06/2024 11:43

Oh, I was convinced that I am failing at gardening! It is the first year with this particular garden setup, with borders & all. Before, it was mostly lawn, some shrubs (snails don't eat shrubs!) and a couple of containers. Snail issues never crossed my mind. Ans now it's like a plague, all border plants are full of holes, like Swiss cheese! Apparently slugs are indeed vile & wild this year, thank you everyone, very reassuring. So far, wool pellets are the only thing working for me.

I also have planted aquarium, where bladder snails are sometimes rampant. But there I have Assassin Snails (Clea Helena) keeping the population in check, by eating the pest snails. Now I feel bad for the bladder snails - their only fault is being unsightly and extremely fertile, they don't eat or damage the plants at all, unlike the garden snails.

I have no doubt it will find its way back. The railway side is just nettles and comfry whereas our side has lettuces and runner beans and 1000 delicious slugs.

It will sniff the air and then home back in. Wish I'd taken a picture though it was unbelievably massive.

I wondered why that blackbird was flying all wonky...

@Chypre Assassin Snails!

Definitely not from my yeast solution!

I just here for the swearing. Every night I'm out there with my head torch on collecting the slimy bastards, muttering rude comments as I go.
Don't get me started on the fuckers that are Vine weavils....mutter mutter...chunter chunter ....

ParentsTrapped · 12/06/2024 16:00

I’ve had success with loads of ground coffee all around the base of my lupins and hostas, plus beer traps.

Worst of all though is that we have some that come out in our kitchen at night - we have slime on the mat most mornings. No idea where they are coming from and have never seen one 🤢

Swearing companions we are then! 😂

Fuckity fuck fuck

Maggiethecat · 12/06/2024 16:54

swearing and grumbling in the dark , torch in hand - the neighbours think I’m looney 😂

EatCrow · 10/06/2024 19:46

I’ll stick to planting in pots (they are huge pots), particularly for vegetables.

My slugs and snails are not deterred by pots sadly 😭

Really bad slugs here too, they love chard.
Have been cultivating werms in the compost heap.
The slugs are winning but the werms are fat.

Oh, lucky you! Used to have dozens in our garden in Kent, but none here
